Bharath University, officially known as Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, was founded in 1994.
It was established in 1984 by the Sri Lakshmi Ammal Educational Trust, founded by the academic visionary Dr. K.S.R. Ramasamy.
Bharath University offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in engineering, technology, science, business administration, law, pharmacy, and nursing.
The university has four campuses, three in Chennai and one in Puducherry. The university is also home to a number of research centers and institutes, including the Bharath Centre for Biotechnology, the Bharath Centre for Space Science and Technology, and the Bharath Centre for Nanotechnology.
Bharath University is accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with an A++ grade, and is also accredited by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), the National Board of Accreditation (NBA), and the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers (NABH). In 2018, Bharath University became the first private university in India to receive international accreditation from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) of the United States.
Bharath University is ranked among the top universities in India by various rankings agencies, including the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), the QS World University Rankings, and the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. In the 2023 NIRF rankings, Bharath University was ranked 66th overall in India and 11th in Chennai.
